Second only to Saudi Arabia, Iraq contains 112 billion barrels of
proven oil reserves. These reserves are located in 73 structures,
with only 15 having been developed. The Jurassic and Triassic levels,
mainly in the Western Desert, could yield additional resources
in the deeper oil-bearing formations.
Rumaila and Kirkuk are the country's two largest active fields, producing
Iraq's main export crude. Basrah Medium, Basrah Heavy and Basrah
Regular are 3 streams being produced from the southern Rumaila field.
Sulfur crude is being produced from the northern Kirkuk field. Expansion
at the main Basrah and Kirkuk fields could be limited by the presence
of water in the reservoirs. |
